JiaoyiChinese folding chair

The jiaoyi is a traditional Chinese folding chair with crossed legs, descended from the ancient folding stool known as the maza. In the hierarchical society of imperial China, it became a symbol of rank and status. The expression “to sit in the first folding chair” therefore came to signify leadership or the highest position of authority.
